Considering that some 2,5 billion people lack sanitation and 900 million people do not have access to safe drinking water this might seem like a welcome development. History has repeated itself and in South Africa 2010 Ghana again is the only of the five African representatives to advance in this year’s event. It is proper to congratulate the Ghana Black Stars for making Africa proud again. Bravo!

In the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany Ghana’s victory over the USA earned the Stars the ticket to advance to the 16th round. I asked myself this, “If all these young boys and girls have to work that hard on the streets of Ghana to make ends meet, what time is left for them to study or do their home work from school?” Somehow I think these future assets of Ghana are gradually wasting away due to the lack of opportunities, direction and leadership. Finance and Economy: IMF Lends $119 Million to Ghana, Warns on Public Spending Cuts

Finance and Economy Anonymous writes "By Nasreen Seria

June 10 (Bloomberg) -- The International Monetary Fund approved a $119 million loan to Ghana to help support the economy, while warning that the government must rein in public spending.

The loan will bring Ghana’s total disbursements under the Extended Credit Facility to $218 million, the Washington-based lender said in a statement on its website.

Ghana, which is set to become Africa’s newest oil exporter later this year, is aiming to cut its budget deficit to 7.5 percent of gross domestic product this year from about 10.2 percent in 2009.

Reducing the deficit “will require tight controls over spending, including public administration costs, and strengthening revenue mobilization,” the IMF said. “The government should stand ready to tighten fiscal policies promptly, if the need arises.”
